Solve The Case

As the technology rises in our present day, people's minds are beginning to change. People's minds have evolved into a higher state then it once was. Back when we weren't so easily manipulated by our surroundings. Personally, I wasn't raised to envision outside the box. In my mother's opinion she did not think that I needed to know more than I should. I also believe that I was not taught to problem solve in this form because we live in a small town. However, things have changed and it seems that kids today are in need to be more alert and more informed. In other words, the sooner children are taught reasoning skills the sooner they
will be ready for the their outside world.

One of the many reasons children should be taught these skills is simply for logical reasons. How to approach a problem and finding the solution to the problem, in more than just one form. Lately we have been living in a world where kids are being introduced to a variety of information that they may not be able to deal with. The sooner they are taught the critical thinking process the faster they can manage their situations. By teaching them these skills they may be able to handle a variety of things such as test taking strategies, and/or learning abilities. Which will most definitely prepare them for their near future. These skills will be able help handle questions like the ones Sherlock Homes has. There are ways to teach elementary students in books of art or poems, like the books of "Nate the Great" and "Private Eyes Club".

By enhancing kids in reasoning skills they can develop a higher learning ability, which can then lead them to a successful future. Research's show that we generally lack in teaching critical thinking to our students. We do not put forth the effort in going through these thinking skills thoroughly. Instead, we immediately jump to the basics of what the students need to know, like the alphabet and numbers. Not helping them think in a much more detailed form that enhances their mathematical and science skills. I read a quote that well-grounded the right words to explain our teachings, "We should be teaching students how to think. Instead we are teaching them what to think" by Clement and Lochhead. This quote has very good reasoning to it and alot of truth behind it.

High school students are also found to be incompetent of certain subjects in school because of their lack of thinking skills. Studies have shown that seventeen year old students can not write a persuasive essay, or figure out basic step by step mathematical problems.

Having personal experience, I see how the lack of critical thinking has influenced me now. I was strictly taught to do certain things in certain a way. However, I feel that I should have opened my mind sooner to other learning and thinking options, to better my problem solving skills.

  1. I agree. The whole system seems to be built around the idea that children need to know certain things and as long as they have the basics down everything will be fine. However when, not only kids but adults as well, run into a problem that they don't have an answer to they don't know what to do and this problem wouldn't be an issue if we only know how to think.
